FBYC Sailing School is dedicated to making sure every student learns the skills necessary to have fun on the water. It is a Sailing School and with programs for Beginners all the way to being on a Race Team. For 8 weeks every summer the grounds of Frenchman's Bay Yacht Club are full of the fun and games and friendships you'd find at any summer camp. There are dress-up days, picnics, swimming and afternoons at the beach. But amid all the fun and games, there is a lot of learning going on. We are a nationally-recognised Sailing School run by exceptional instructors and coaches. We teach and certify students using the Sail Canada standards. Students enjoy a fun, safe program that promotes exercise, develops self-confidence and teaches sportsmanship. Quality sailboats and our warm natural bay allow for the best hands-on experience. And for those who want to step it up a notch there is the award winning FBYC Race Team includes racers in three classes of boats (420's, Laser, and Optimist.) Start Keelboat Sailing - The ideal course for the first time sailor. Learn the basics of crewing in this 12 hour introductory program on a sloop rigged keelboat, 6 to 12 metres with an outboard motor in 5 - 20 knots of wind. Maximum of 3 students per instructor. You will receive instruction in sailing terms and definitions, marine weather, knots and the duties of skipper and crew. During the course you will be learning how to safely depart for a day, handling the boat under both sail and power, including emergency situations. Mid Week evening Course 1 : Tuesday and Thursday May 21, 23, 28 and 30 from 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm.

This course teaches the fundamental skills and theory required to meet the Sail Canada Basic Cruising Standard. This is an introductory program to the sport of sailing with a focus on fun, safety and fundamental skills. We offer 2 levels for CANSail 1&2 using our fleet of 420s/Optimist sailboats.

4 Week Program. CANSail 3 & 4 progressively builds and develops the skills in CANSail 1 & 2, with a focus on keeping the sailor engaged with appropriate challenges and learning opportunities. CANSail 3&4 may include the opportunity for some local regatta participation. This program is taught using our fleet of 420 dinghies. Must have completed CANSail 2 to register.

The Learn to Race program is 4 week program developed to teach the fundamentals of racing, while still maintaining a focus on fun, safety and basic sailing skills. This course is taught in fibreglass Optimist and prepares the first time racer for some local regattas in the Optimist Green Fleet (beginners) and progression to the Optimist Race Team program.

Sailors are also introduced to the concept of rig tuning and its relation to boat trim and conditions. Sailors will participate in two local regattas (included in the price of registration). CANSail 6 fully integrates boat handling, sail trim, and rig setup with racing. Sailors train to perform all skills within a competitive race setting in order to achieve accurate sailing within a regatta and in all conditions. Sailors will have an opportunity to race and try other sailboats.
